Rep. Al Green, who was removed from President Donald Trump's address to a joint session of Congress, has filed articles of impeachment and accused the president of being "authoritarian."
05/16/2025 --axios
Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) said Friday he will force a vote on impeaching President Trump — just days after another Trump impeachment effort was scuttled. Why it matters: Green, unlike Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.), has a history of following through on this sort of thing. He repeatedly forced unsanctioned impeachment votes against Trump during his first term.Still, senior Democratic lawmakers and leadership aides told Axios that Green should expect to come under the same kind of pressure that Thanedar faced to back off his efforts."I think the same standard would be applied," said one House Democrat.Driving the news: Green said in a letter sent to fellow House Democrats' offices that he "will call for a vote to impeach authoritarian President Donald John Trump at a time to be determined."The impeachment measure includes a single article charging Trump with "causing the devolution of democracy within the United States of America into authoritarianism with himself as an authoritarian President."Green told Axios on Wednesday that he would force such a vote despite what he anticipated would be anger from his Democratic colleagues. "I'm sure people will let me know how they feel," he said.Between the lines: Most House Democrats are reluctant to take an impeachment vote out of fear that any such effort will be widely viewed as premature and overtly political at this stage.Democratic leadership wants nothing to do with these efforts, in part because it forces vulnerable House Democrats to choose between appeasing their grassroots base and not alienating swing voters.Thanedar was the subject of considerable anger from House Democrats for his unsanctioned efforts. With Republicans in control of both chambers, Democrats are also clear-eyed that impeaching Trump — let alone convicting him in the Senate — is virtually impossible at this stage.

Faced with two primary challengers and growing public support for impeaching U.S. President Donald Trump a historic third time, Congressman Shri Thanedar on Monday filed seven articles of impeachment against the second-term Republican."Donald Trump has repeatedly demonstrated that he is unfit to serve as president and represents a clear and present danger to our nation's constitution and our democracy," Thanedar (D-Mich.) said in a statement. "His unlawful actions have subverted the justice system, violated the separation of powers, and placed personal power and self-interest above public service. We cannot wait for more damage to be done. Congress must act."Thanedar explained the seven articles of impeachment included in his resolution in a brief video, which he shared on social media. As a statement from the congressman's office details, Trump's alleged constitutional violations are:Obstruction of Justice and Abuse of Executive Power: Including denial of due process, unlawful deportations, defiance of court orders, and misuse of the Department of Justice.Usurpation of Appropriations Power: For dismantling congressionally established agencies and impounding federal funds.Abuse of Trade Powers and International Aggression: Including imposing economically damaging tariffs and threatening military invasion against sovereign nations.Violation of First Amendment Rights: Through retaliatory actions against critics, media, and attorneys exercising constitutionally protected speech.Creation of an Unlawful Office: By establishing the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and unlawfully empowering Elon Musk to unilaterally violate the Constitution.Bribery and Corruption: Involving dismissing criminal cases, soliciting foreign emoluments, and extortionate settlements for personal and political gain.Tyrannical Overreach: Seeking to consolidate unchecked power, erode civil liberties, and defy constitutional limits on presidential authority.Earlier this month, Thanedar called for Trump's impeachment over his administration's failure to comply with a 9-0 Supreme Court ruling about facilitating the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia from a prison in El Salvador to the United States."We must take action now," he said at the time. "Donald Trump and members of his administration are deporting people with limited evidence and no due process to horrific megaprisons in a foreign nation. As a member of Congress, I have a responsibility to uphold the checks and balances that safeguard the integrity of our democracy and prevent a slide into authoritarianism. This must be a red line. Otherwise, we risk Donald Trump continuing to defy the Constitution in his own interest, rather than the interest of the nation.""Enough is enough," Thanedar declared. "We can not allow this obvious authoritarian power grab to continue. I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to stand up for the Constitution and the American people and join the call for impeachment."While Thanedar had expressed support for impeachment prior to Monday, his resolution came as a second primary challenger announced his candidacy for Michigan's 13th Congressional District. State Rep. Donavan McKinney (D-11) joined former state Sen. Adam Hollier (D-2), who has twice tried to oust the congressman and is trying to do so again next year.McKinney is backed by the progressive group Justice Democrats, whose executive director Alexandra Rojas said in a statement earlier Monday that "Democratic voters in the face of unprecedented attacks on our livelihoods and liberties are fed up with a Democratic Party overrun by do-nothing career politicians who are totally unequipped to lead in this moment. Donavan represents the future the Democratic Party should be fighting: working-class people taking our power back from multimillionaires to deliver for everyday people."After Thanedar announced the impeachment resolution, Business Insider senior politics reporter Bryan Metzger said on social media Monday that it is "always interesting to see how primary challenges affect members' behavior, though usually it's a bit more subtle than this."Recent polling has found that a majority of voters disapprove of how Trump is handling his job and would support a historic third impeachment. In response to one survey, Free Speech for People's Alexandra Flores-Quilty—whose group is leading a nonpartisan Impeach Trump Again campaign—declared Friday that "it's up to Congress to do their job, defend the Constitution, and impeach and remove Donald Trump from office for his grave abuses of power."Trump is the only president to be impeached twice by the House of Representatives—though in both cases during his first term, he was acquitted by the Senate. Republicans now narrowly control both chambers of Congress. While Republicans haven't yet signaled a willingness to stand against the president, U.S. Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) told attendees of an early April anti-Trump rally that "within the next 30 days, I'm bringing articles of impeachment."Axios noted Monday that "Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) also privately floated impeaching Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard over Signalgate."
04/28/2025 --axios
Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.) on Monday introduced seven long-shot articles of impeachment against President Trump. Why it matters: It's the first time this year a House Democrat has tried to impeach the president or a member of his administration — though it will almost certainly not be the last.Rep. Al Green (D-Texas), who was censured last month for disrupting Trump's speech to a joint session of Congress, has said he is planning articles of impeachment as well.Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) also privately floated impeaching Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard over Signalgate.Driving the news: Thanedar — who garnered a second primary challenger on Monday morning — said in a statement that Trump is "unfit to serve as President and represents a clear and present danger to our nation's constitution and our democracy.""We cannot wait for more damage to be done. Congress must act," he added. His articles of impeachment accuse Trump of obstruction of justice, abuse of power, usurpation of power, bribery and corruption — mostly related to the president's consolidation of power and personal finances.Reality check: The measures are almost certainly going nowhere, especially with Republicans in control of both the House and Senate.Thanedar could in theory force a vote on impeachment, but has not said if he will do so.A White House spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

House Democratic leadership privately confronted the roughly dozen progressive members of their caucus for apparently disregarding requests for decorum during President Donald Trump’s terrible speech to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday.According to Axios, the three most senior House Democratic leaders—Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar, Minority Whip Katherine Clark, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries—gathered the group of disruptors on Thursday morning. The trio was reportedly “very unhappy” with the cadre of leftist lawmakers who (gasp!) coordinated outfits or refused to clap during Trump’s nearly two-hour speech. Reps. Jasmine Crockett of Texas, Maxine Dexter of Oregon, Maxwell Frost of Florida, and Melanie Stansbury of New Mexico, were among the progressive lawmakers called into the “come to Jesus meeting.”A source familiar with the gathering stressed that the lawmakers were “not getting yelled at” nor were they “being talked to like they are children.” Instead, House Democratic leadership said they wanted the affected legislators to “understand why their strategy is a bad idea.”Rep. Nydia Velazquez of New York and fellow Democrats protest President Donald Trump’s speech to Congress on March 4, 2025.“It doesn’t surprise me leadership is very upset. They gave specific instructions not to do that,” another source said, seemingly referring to a “dear colleague” letter that Jeffries sent to the caucus before Trump’s address. In the letter, Jeffries urged his colleagues to have a “strong, determined, and dignified Democratic presence in the chamber.” Democrats were also privately told not to use props during the president’s speech. But some rank-and-file Democrats ignored both requests. Stansbury, for instance, held a sign reading, “This is NOT normal,” which was yanked out of her hands by GOP Rep. Lance Gooden of Texas. And Frost wore a shirt donning the phrase, “No Kings Live Here,” an apparent reference to Trump’s description of himself as a “king” in a recent post on Truth Social.Democrats don’t seem to know how they plan to protest Trump—assuming they even want to at all. Those who vote in favor of the president’s agenda, even if they later admit that they screwed up, face few consequences. Meanwhile, silent protesters are admonished behind closed doors while those who object to Trump’s lies more blatantly—such as Rep. Al Green of Texas—get censured by the House, including by 10 fellow Democrats.Perhaps Democratic leadership wanted all protests to occur outside of the chamber. But considering that the bulk of their caucus has struggled to find an effective way to call out Trump, it’s shameful to pull aside the few members who have directly pushed back against the Trump administration.Surprising no one, other “Democrats”—like Rep. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania—have also admonished dissenters. On the day of Trump’s speech, Fetterman called the protests “a sad cavalcade of self owns and unhinged petulance” in a post on X.Notably, Democrats’ takedown of their own caucus’ protesting methods isn’t all that different from what Trump himself said shortly after Green was kicked out of the chamber. “This is my fifth such speech to Congress,” he said, “and once again, I look at the Democrats in front of me, and I realize there is absolutely nothing I can say to make them happy or to make them stand or smile or applaud.”Campaign Action
