Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) blasted Republicans for calling an immigration hearing about the "rule of law" after President Donald Trump pardoned around 1,500 Jan. 6 rioters, including violent offenders.During Wednesday's House Judiciary Committee hearing, Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) first called out Subcommittee Chair Tom McClintock (R-CA)."Don't tell me that the motivation for the immigration crackdown is public safety when we release these violent criminals back into our communities," she quipped.Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), chair of the full Judiciary Committee, followed by faulting the Biden administration for allowing immigrants into the country."Who wouldn't want to come to the greatest country ever?" he ranted. "But you've got to do it legally."Raskin pushed back after Jordan's remarks."The chairman began by saying the point here is to restore the rule of law," Raskin noted. "Can you even pretend to do that if you stand by and support Donald Trump, who on day one, as the chairman of the committee just said, day one of his presidency pardoned 1,500 insurrectionists, including hundreds of people who violently assaulted and attacked American police officers?"ALSO READ: Inside the parade of right-wing world leaders flocking to D.C. for Trump's inauguration"The family of Officer Sicknick is absolutely devastated and demolished by what's just happened," the Democratic lawmaker said of a slain Capitol Police officer. "And now you have the temerity to come forward and say this is about public safety?""How much safer are we now with these 1,500 criminals at large in Washington, D.C., and going out into the country?" he asked.
